In fact, Lazio (5.500.000 inhabitants) has a rather varied territory made of low sandy coasts; volcanic and hilly scenarios; Albani, Volsini, Cimini and Sabatini mountains; volcanic lakes like Bolsena, Vico and Bracciano. The Ager Romanus, which consisted of swampland, was reclaimed between 1930 and ’40. It includes Rome and the southern areas towards the mouth of River Tevere. The other provinces are Frosinone, Latina, Viterbo and Rieti.
Rich in history, legends and festivals, the land was occupied from as early as the second millennium BC (protohistory) by the Latins of Indo-European origins. Wars, migrations and commerce then brought several other civilizations, such as the Etruscans, who had a great influence on politics and culture. Then came the Falisci, Sabines, Hernici, Aequi, Aurunci, Volsci…
History and legends (from Romulus and Remus to the great Pagan mythology), Lazio is a region rich in culture, archaeological sites (like Ostia Antica, Tivoli, Pomezia, Tuscania and Tarquinia), reserves and protected areas (like Circeo and Gran Sasso), agricultural and tourism resources.
