Bologna and the hedonism of Emilia-Romagna
Emilia-Romagna is one of the richest regions in Europe. The standard of living here is higher than the average in Europe. The majority of the land consists of plains (including a vast and fertile portion of the Po Valley), and has about 4.200.000 inhabitants. The origins of the region date back to the Paleolithic, but the historical origins correspond to the settlement of the Lombards (568 AD). During the centuries of the ‘Signorie’ this cultivated, hedonistic and artistically refined region was enriched by the splendours of the Duchies of Parma and Piacenza, and of Modena, Reggio and Ferrara.
The flourishing economy of Emilia-Romagna is mainly based upon a very efficient system of cooperatives and family run small and medium enterprises, the principal sectors being agriculture (cereal and wine), cattle-breeding, automotive, food, electronic and textile industries.
The culinary tradition of Bologna and Emilia-Romagna has become world-famous because of its huge variety and delicious flavours. Tagliatelle, ragù, tortellini, cappelletti and lasagne, as far as the first courses are concerned. The main courses consist of fried foods, bollito, salami, stuffed vegetables, etc… And cheeses, like Parmigiano Reggiano (parmesan), Grana Padano and Provolone. A huge range of desserts that date back to the Renaissance, filled with almonds, honey and spices, like the Panspeziale and the Panpepato.
Bologna (373.000 inhabitants) is the capital of the region. A renowned University – that is also one of the most ancient in Western Europe – and an imposing and elegant historical centre which includes the noble medieval towers by Matteo Galati and Matteo Molinari, archways, palaces and churches (e.g. the beautiful Gothic S.Petronio church). A world-famous cultural centre, and an important city for fairs and congresses, Bologna in also rich in commerce, it is a crucial communications crossroads, and a railway, motorway and airport network.
Cities like Piacenza, Reggio, Forlì and Parma are also famous. The latter is renowned for its delicious ham, fortified village, luxurious Palazzo Ducale and Palazzo Vescovile, and works of art by Correggio and Parmigianino. Ferrara is a blaze of villas, art galleries, abbeys, monasteries, cathedrals and castles. Modena, which, throughout the centuries, has been Etruscan, Gallic, Roman, and of the Este family, is an important University and Episcopal city. And the three-time capital Ravenna – during the Western Roman Empire, the Kingdom of the Ostrogoths, and the Byzantine Exarchate. Last not least important, the seaside resorts of Rimini, Riccione and Cattolica.
