Inaugurazione 17 gennaio ore 12.00
Apertura per la stampa ore 11.00
Apertura al pubblico venerdì 19 gennaio
19 gennaio – 4 marzo 2007 Biblioteca Reale Torino

Inaugurazione 17 gennaio ore 12.00
Apertura per la stampa ore 11.00
Apertura al pubblico venerdì 19 gennaio
19 gennaio – 4 marzo 2007 Biblioteca Reale Torino

Murano – a Dream of Glass

Venice, the Serenissima of the Dogi. A maritime Federal Republic, and a great Mediterranean power. A florid and powerful empire of commerce since the 1400 and 1500. ‘Fantasy of the Orient’ of Sultans and Emperors. ‘Powerful in strength… and huge in virtue’ (Petrarca, writer). Listed by the UNESCO as Heritage of Humanity in 1987, it is the most appealing Italian city to tourists. It includes 150 channels and 120 isles and islets, like Chioggia, Torcello, Burano (lace crafts) and Murano (glass crafts). Canal Grande is the main intersection, while beautiful Piazza San Marco, with its Greek-cross plan Basilica, is a central rendez-vous. Next to the Basilica we find Palazzo Ducale, seat of the Dogi and a precious work of International Gothic art, made of luxurious rooms furnished with paintings by Titian, Gianbattista Tiepolo, Tintoretto and Paolo Veronese.
But Venice is also events: the Venice Biennial Art Exhibition, the Cinema Festival and Carnival, which celebrates popular yet refined marks, and has become a quite fashionable occurrence.
The entire Region is a prosperous and serene land. Praised by writers like Goethe, Shakespeare and Thomas Mann, in early history it had been dominated by the Euganei, later chased away by the Veneti. Then it went through a gradual and peaceful romanization. In fact Romans and Veneti formed a successful alliance against the Gaulish. The entire region shows traces of the splendour of Venice both from an artistic and historical point of view. Cities like Verona (Roman, then Medieval and finally governed by the Della Scala; the Arena, Piazza delle Erbe and Juliet’s house…), Padua (the University, theScrovegni Chappel with frescoes by Giotto), Vicenza and Treviso. Then Rovigo, Chioggia, Bassano del Grappa, San Donà di Piave. Palladian villas, Goldonian style masks and the ‘colorismo veneto’, in other words the use of bright and vivid colours in paintings, which express both aesthetic measure and joie de vivre.

Puglia, Savoury flavours in the Ionian and Adriatic area.

Puglia (Apulia) is the most industrialized region in southern Italy. Caught between the Adriatic and the Ionian Sea, it is the eastern most point of the peninsula, and has the widest coastline in Italy. A typical territory of Magna Graecia (Hellenic civilization), Puglia is also rich in prehistoric finds (like Menhirs and Dolmens). Around year 1000 BC it was occupied by the Dauni, the Pacezi and the Messapii. Then came the Roman domain. In the Middle Ages the land was invaded by the Normans and the Swabians, while in the 1800 the Bourbons settled their reign and Puglia went through a liberal phase.

Besides Bari, the main cities are Brindisi, Lecce (famous for its Baroque architecture), Foggia, Taranto, Barletta-Andria-Trani. The population is 4.069.000 inhabitants. The land consists of plains (the Tavoliere) for the most part, and hills (Murge and Kras plateau). The coast is marked by sheer cliffs and outstanding sandy beaches (Taranto, Santa Maria di Leuca, Otranto, Ostumi and Gallipoli, the ‘pearl of Salento’). Visitors cannot miss Gargano, an imposing mountain massif (‘spur of Italy’ and National Park), in the province of Lecce. The small and precious archipelago of the Tremiti is also noteworthy.

The climate of Puglia is typically Mediterranean, the summers being hot and dry, and very sunny. The vegetation consists of fragrant Mediterranean scrub and a rather varied fauna (pine groves, oaks, beeches, maples, brooms, junipers and myrtles).

The culinary tradition is rich in full flavoured dishes, fish specialities, and home-made pasta (orecchiette with ragù, Cavatelli with mussels). A tourist region, because it is full of beautiful sceneries – countless routes, Parks and reserves – Puglia has some fully equipped accommodation: hotels, resorts, restaurants, campsites, flats and villas, bed and breakfasts and so on.

Terre di Siena

The abundance of the pictorial experience that the lively town of Siena managed to prompt in the last part of the fifteenth and the beginning of the sixteenth-centuries, is important not only for the quantity produced but for its quality too. Evidence of this is the flourishing of pictorial cycles, sculptural works of major relevance, architectural and urban planning, the creation of decorative objects for the living spaces of the great patricians, and the production of traditional paintings for public and private worship.

The Exhibition at the National Gallery of London, dedicated to the Sienese Renaissance offers a vast array of that production, it cannot possibly represent it in its entirety, considering the works of art which are not portable and the necessity for a selection of the most representative ones.
It becomes very important for the visitor, who wants to deepen his/her knowledge of that period in history, so rich in the development of the figurative arts, to visit the most relevant sites of an itinerary that unfolds through the town centre and the surrounding Sienese territory, territory that has been marked by the most significant artists of the time. These are unmissable places for those who want not only penetrate the soul of the fifteenth-century Sienese art but also its social, economic and religious history.

The two main focal points of Siena representing the civil power on one hand (Palazzo Pubblico and the Spedale di Santa Maria della Scala) and the religious power on the other (The Cathedral) maintain the most relevant examples of that cultural change.
Within the Palazzo Pubblico the sumptuous consistorial hall was decorated by Domenico Beccafumi with scenes of the civic virtues, project that lasted from 1529 to 1535. Emphatic mannerism, vivid colours and daring illusionistic representations attract the spectator to one of the most fascinating pictorial cycles of the time.
Not far way on the Pellegrini street which leads to the baptistery Beccafumi himself, developed a complex series of images with characters from mythology and ancient history, commissioned by the proprietor Marcello Agostini. The cycle is considered as one of the highest expressions of the italian cinquecento, one of the “secret” places in a palace that is still a private property and it will open to the general public in the course of the exhibition, rare chance not to be missed. Almost in front of it, Palazzo del Magnifico, residence of Pandolfo Petrucci, Siena’s ruler, at the time sumptuous patrician residence, furnished by the most important artists present in Siena at the end of the fifteenth-century and of which only the architectural structure remains after it was stripped off of all its decorations and furniture during the XIX century.

Such items are today part of the town and foreign museums’ collections. What is left of the representations are the two evocative scenes frescoed by Girolamo Genga (Flight of Aeneas from Troy, The liberation of the prisoners) in the Pinacoteca Nazionale of Siena.
Not far away Palazzo Piccolomini built by the heirs of Pope Pius II after his death is one of the purest example of Renaissance architecture thought to be built on a plan by Bernardo Rossellino, the pope’s architect. The palace is today the site of the Archivio di Stato of Siena with the museum of the Biccherne where it is possible to admire the outstanding collection of painted biccherna tablets, originally book covers of the ledgers of the biccherna and gabella, the financial and fiscal offices of the commune of Siena.

Almost all the Sienese Renaissance artists ventured on painting the wooden panels, precious like miniatures and very often characterized by the representation of the main events of Sienese history. Sano di Pietro was commissioned more than once to celebrate contemporary people and their noble achievements (in 1457, in 1471, in 1473); Vecchietta depicted the Coronation of Pope Pius II Piccolomini in the biccherna of 1460; Francesco di Giorgio recalled the earthquake in the biccherna of 1467; Neroccio was entrusted with the Intercession of the Virgin Mary to Jesus for the town of Siena and Guidoccio Cozzarelli depicted the scene of the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple, so skillfully that considering he was confined to the small surface of the tablet the result is with no doubt equal to any of his altarpieces.

For the Sienese Duomo the most innovative artists conceived the main pictorial and sculptural cycles: Bernardino di Betto, known as Pinturicchio, was commissioned to fresco the Piccolomini Library, created to house Pope Pius II’s library and to celebrate his magnificence depicting his deeds in a representation of rare elegance, sharp narrative spirit, formal style and chromatic exuberance. Right below the frescos, the glass cases contain a collection of antiphons decorated with miniatures by Girolamo da Cremona, Liberale da Verona, Sano di Pietro, which are the most outstanding ones of the fifteenth century. Very rich is the production of sculpture which includes the leading figures of the Renaissance plastic arts. To remember just a few important ones: from the bronze Baptist by Donatello to the Ciborium for the high altar by Vecchietta; from the Angels by Francesco di Giorgio and Giovanni di Stefano, to the Candelabras in the form of Angels by Beccafumi, to the Piccolomini’s altar ornate with marble sculptures by Michelangelo. The intarsia work of the marble floor, of an unparalleled elegance, was created by the greatest Sienese artists of the fifteenth and sixteenth-century: Matteo di Giovanni, Guidoccio Cozzarelli, Benvenuto di Giovanni, Antonio Federighi and above all Domenico Beccafumi who drew thirteen of them.

The Spedale di Santa Maria della Scala in front of the Duomo, very powerful economic institution saw, after the great achievement of the frescos of the Pellegrinaio (in which scenes from the hospital daily life had been depicted by Domenico di Bartolo) the contribution of Vecchietta, in the Grand Vestry, who frescoed the entire hall with stories from the Old and New Testament, and the contribution of Beccafumi with an early work, the Visitation.

Not far away the Pinacoteca Nazionale is some sort of encyclopedia of the Sienese figurative arts where all the artists are vastly represented by very high quality artworks: two very large halls show the works of Francesco di Giorgio, Matteo di Giovanni, Neroccio di Bartolomeo; and the great altarpieces by Vecchietta, Benvenuto di Giovanni, Girolamo di Benvenuto, Francesco di Giorgio and Beccafumi.

The figure of the ruler of Siena, Pandolfo Petrucci is linked to one of the most significant religious building, the Basilica dell’Osservanza, founded by San Bernardino and chosen by Pandolfo as his resting place. In the Vestry, planned by him, there are the elegant choir-stalls of carved wood by Antonio Barili and the sculpture in polychrome terracotta moulded by Giacomo Cozzarelli in an intense expressive language supported by a stylish polychromy, a masterpiece of the Sienese late-Renaissance statuary.

The influence of the revived figurative language in the more classic forms of the late-Renaissance, filtered, with no doubt, through the presence in Siena of the most influential artists of the quattrocento (Donatello, in the first place but also Benedetto da Maiano, Bernardo Rossellino, Luca Signorelli, Pinturicchio) spreading out rapidly through the Sienese culture in such a way to gain commissions even from outside the city’s territory. We can positively affirm that it is not possible to find a place in the whole of the Sienese province that has not seen at least one of the relevant artistic episodes of the time.

An itinerary devised by area will allow us to deepen the knowledge of the Renaissance through those works of art scattered across the whole of the province’s territory and we will be amazed by their quantity and conspicuity.

Florence: art city or art work? The historic centre of Florence contains such a wealth of masterpieces that it is difficult to separate the city from its art works. In 1982 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the motivation being that it encapsulates the whole history of the city, from the ‘Roman quadrilateral’ in the Piazza della Repubblica area to the narrow streets of the medieval city, the splendours of the 16th-century Pitti Palace and the changes wrought at the time when Florence was capital of Italy The density of such a fabulously rich legacy – historic and artistic but also scientific and naturalistic – in a small, well-defined space makes Florence city centre quite unique,

not only in the eyes of the curious visitor but also in those of scholars and local people. With its extraordinarily beautiful churches, its museums and art collections, historic gardens, piazzas, streets and ancient palaces, Florence can justifiably be defined as an “open-air museum” – not simply a container for art works but a work of art in its own right. However, to fully appreciate the artistic richness of Florence, one must also look beyond the city centre: the area “outside the walls” and the province as a whole also has an incredible legacy; the Medici and various affluent merchant families left many traces of their presence there over the centuries, and there is an abundance of religious art. Finally, it should be noted that the Polo Museale Fiorentino (a network of twenty city museums, ranging from the Uffizi to the smallest, least-known one) comprises the greatest concentration of art works in Italy and one of the largest in the world.

A perfect natural scenery not far from Turin, full of dazzling mountainous panoramas, among thick forests and brilliant summits. The Lanzo Valleys grant a serene and balanced relationship between man and nature, consolidated by the tireless artisan tradition.
From iron and stone to wood, man forges and manipulates the resources given by the nature, fitting them to his needs and framing new forms, without altering the balances.
Stone pits, where antique trades are renewed by modern tools. Wood workshops, where between creativity and technical ability they produce sculptures, intaglios, handmade articles and restorations. The Art of Iron. As well as the joys and entertainments of tourism: trips, horse and bike riding, fishing and much more, thanks to appropriate accommodation facilities. At last, the local gastronomy, which offers a rare gem: the unrepeatable Toma di Lanzo, refined and appreciated for its fragrance, consistency and taste.

It is the most secret valley in the area of Cuneo: a land rich in Occitan traditions, in craftsmanship and natural resources. Maira Valley, even through the plain and healthy nature of its population, achieves a lucky relationship between man and environment. Dotted with plenty of villages, stony chapels, medieval buildings and ancient muletracks, the valley features, among other things, a strong tradition of great artisan excellence, still very industrious in many fields: metal and stone manufacturing, bread making, gastronomy (honey, biscuits), wood manufacturing (rural and “poor art” furnishing, gift and fancy goods), lace, trills and much more.
The best tour to visit the valley and its various towns (as Busca, Villar S. Costanzo, Roccabruna, Dronero, S. Damiano Macra, Lottulo and many others) is offered by the so-called “Occitan routes”: a traditional itinerary abounding in alternative ramifications, with different toughness, which the elder contributed to rebuild and restore. Yet Maira valley breathes and lives on tourism: so it is that family-run facilities give a simple and cosy reception, which helps the tourist orientate and budge oneself in this fresh mountain spot, all to be discovered.

The area of Vergante is naturally beautiful. The Comunità Montana dei due laghi – Mountain Community of the two Lakes (Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta) includes seven Communes, where natural beauties harmoniously merge with artistic ones. An exceptional landscape, where mount Mottarone acts as watershed between the two lacustrine extents, and a maze of paths, old alleys, among monuments and sacred constructions.
Nebbiuno, Massino Visconti, Pisano, Colazza; Ameno, Miasino and Armeno: within these seven towns concentrates, among others, a rare artisan patrimony, properly decorated with the “Artisan Excellence” trademark given by Region Piedmont.
Massino Visconti, besides a curious Umbrella Maker monument, offers the great Castle of the Viscontis. Artisan firms are multifarious, from bread making to flowers (honey, cheese). In the area is remarkable as well the legendary Benedectine abbey of St. Savior.
Nebbiuno distinguishes itself, among others, by the artisan excellence of its wood: furnishing restoration and decoration for antique dealers and churches, as well as refined hand manufactured articles for furnishing and adorning the surrounding villas in Piedmont and Lumbardy. Remarkable is St. George’s Church, for its great organ and the antique painting that portrays St. George killing the dragon.
The route then unwinds among churches, old alleys and panoramic views of Lake Maggiore, ending in the towns of Tapigliano and Pisano. Then, here it is Colazza, which is important for the tradition for wrought iron and two major churches, enriched with holy works: St. Bernard and the Immaculate.
Ameno, on Lake Orta, may be defined as a little art city: museums, churches, the Oratory of St. Joseph, Palace Tornielli and Museum Calderara.
Miasino as well, besides its interesting baroque church, boasts a prestigious tradition for wood, thanks to renowned masters in furniture-making, very skillful in inlaying ornaments and panels.
Armeno, at last, offers the beautiful Romanic church of the Assumption, and astonishes the visitor with a unique museum dedicated to the hotel life, among antique wines, precious bottles, cookery books and rare menus.
This is the “Comunità Montana dei due laghi“.

Wood, Stone and Robiola cheese in the Langa area near Asti

The sole mountain community in the province of Asti is “Langa Astigiana Val Bormida”, which includes 16 villages of Piedmont, on the border with region Liguria. The landscape is now hilly, with vineyards and meadows, now mountainous and wooded: resulting in a fascinating and animated scenery, with sharp and steep cliffs.
Such lands, before the Romanic colonization, saw through centuries barbarian raids and incursions, as well as numerous settlements by Gauls and Celtics, as it is still testified by many impressive towers and fortresses, intact or in ruins.
Rural population in the area is busy with three main manufactures: stone, wood and dairy products.
The “Stone of Langa” derives from sandstone, and is good for building utilization. It is not mined in caves, but it comes from agricultural activity and from demolition of old facilities: malleable, manageable, pleasant for its appearance, it is used – mainly dry-stone – for building hardy hamlets and embankments.
Moreover, since countless generations local artisans have been improving the manufacture of valuable woods: walnut, oak, cherry tree, beech, chestnut. The material is carved, engraved, shaped, often combining antique and modern techniques: and here you are stylish chairs, tables, “vecchio Piemonte” style wardrobes and many other pieces of furniture.
As for dairy production, among the 9 DPO Piedmont cheeses of cow, caprine and ovine origins, stands out – uncontested as for quality and taste – the valuable ‘Robiola di Roccaverano’, which is much appreciated abroad as well, produced here by some sixty firms.

Italian Masters of Handicraft

Valley Strona, whose name comes from the torrent, lies over Lake Orta, among bare mountains and wild trees. Its inhabitants are industrious and creative people, attached to the territory. Wood manufacturing is here very diffused. Nowadays the lathe is obviously electric, yet till not long ago it was driven by vanes operated by the water flow. Thus, new technologies and modern plants merge with traditional machinery, and with that manual touch, which bestows the product (gift and fancy goods, kitchenware, furnishings) its precise final footprint. Up-to-date workshops produce now fresh homely product lines, capable of withstanding the most aggressive international competition.

The working cycle contemplates various passages: at first, the logs (ash, poplar, maple, elm, olive tree) are sawed into different sections. Boards and planks are then further chopped, and the resulting parts are subjected to turning and further treatments, even with laser pantograph. Then, painting and desiccation. With the packaging the goods are ready for shipment. This is , as well, prestigious Artisan Excellence, openly acknowledged by the Region.

The “Comunità Montana della Val Ceronda e Casternone” – Mountain Community of Valley Ceronda e Casternone includes a wide and varied territory, full of woods, paths and touristic routes practicable by horse, bike or on foot. Small towns rich in history and traditions, with burghs, castles, churches and ancient chapels, as well as a commercial and productive network made of artisan firms, decorated with the “Artisan Excellence” trademark of Piedmont. Thus we have small dairy enterprises, stud-farms, gastronomic and agricultural farms, wood manufacturers, old glassmakers and much more.
Fiano, with its 2703 inhabitants, boasts the beautiful parish church of St. Desiderio, and a nineteenth-century chapel dedicated to St. Antonio Abate. Festivals and public manifestations are frequent: barrel-races, flag-wavers and musicians, between folklore and devotion.
Vallo Torinese (747 inhabitants), then, is renowned for the parish baroque church of St. Secondo. The town keeps the remains of Maria Orsola, whose beatification process is ongoing. The parish priest recalls her exemplar figure and life. Castles, parks, tiny churches, ancient chapels and routes for mountain bike surround the area…
Val della Torre, with its hamlets, includes 42 burghs. Its centre is overlooked by the beautiful Lombard-Romanesque church with a nave and two aisles. The numerous chapels testify a diffused popular religiousness in the surroundings. Here, as well, festivals and public holidays are lively: wild boar, “polenta”, bread and “focaccia” for everyone.

Modern commercial and productive assets cohabit here with antique techniques and trades, within a restless tradition that, in many occasions, has been well deserving the longed-for “Artisan Excellence” trademark given by Region Piedmont. Pastry shops (soft macaroon), wine farms (Erbaluce, Barbera, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto), gastronomic farmhouses, wood workshops (furnishing, frames) and much more: 11 Communes overall, with a total population of 25,000 inhabitants. By and large, a district of great natural beauty, industrious and diffused wealth, thanks, as well, to the resourceful nature of men and families, among age-old traditions and new technologies.
