A troublesome and complicated figure, alternating liberal leaps and wary afterthoughts, Carlo Alberto (“Italian Hamlet” according to Carducci) has always been considered a contradictory and tormented personality. The ambiguity of his temper can partly be explained with an heterogeneous cultural make-up: his mother frequented in Paris the drawing room of Madame de Stael as well as the illuminist intellectual élites; his tutor was Calvinist; back in Piedmont, he was affected by the Catholic culture. In the meanwhile three brothers of the main limb of the Savoy succeeded to the throne: Carlo Emanuele IV, Vittorio Emanuele I and Carlo Felice. Unfortunately none of the three had male heirs. Such a circumstance gave way to Carlo Alberto to the throne of Sardinia.
