Palace Carignano is the heart of Turin and of Italy. Here in 1848 the Statute of Carlo Alberto was issued, by which Italy shifted from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional one. Here were proclaimed the unification of Italy (1861) and Rome as capital city. And here took turns the most famous figures who crafted Italy: rulers such as Carlo Alberto and his son Vittorio Emanuele II, great statesmen such as Cavour, mythical heroes like Garibaldi. As well as the aristocrats and intellectuals of Piedmont, from La Marmora to Gioberti.
Yet, how and why did the construction of Italy start from here? How could, starting right from Piedmont (not central neither rich jurisdiction), the ancient dream of Dante, Petrarca and Machiavelli be achieved, a dream of unifying the too many Lordships into a single political entity, that is, a national State? The idea was carried out thanks to the great unitary effort of Carlo Alberto, Vittorio Emanuele II and Cavour, as well as of many other notorious – and not – figures. All this to be understood, we’ll step back more than a little.
