Bergamo lake

The first lake that visitors come across is Lake Endine, nestled in the Cavallina Valley. Among the green vegetation of its banks, Lake Endine is perfect for relaxation and quiet moments, long walks on foot or by bike, boat trips (motor boats are prohibited) or lying on the grass lawns or small beaches where there are always people sunbathing. Along the road that completes a full circuit of the lake shore (perfect for a bike ride), each village is worth a visit. Some of the most interesting monuments include the Romanesque church of San Pietro in Vincoli (St. Peter in Chains) in Spinone, while San Felice, with its solitary cluster of houses, church, miniscule church courtyard and narrow lane, is one of the most beautiful and intimate of the lake.

The waters of the Sebino, which the province of Bergamo shares with the province of Brescia, is certainly the more “touristy” of the two islands in terms of size, facilities, beaches and opportunities for swimming.
Of glacial origins, like its smaller brother in the Cavallina Valley, the lake has Montisola, the largest lake island in Europe, sitting in its centre.

The Sebino is a genuine tourist “system”, which attracts, particularly during the summer and weekends, a large number of people. Along the Bergamask shore, in addition to swimming pools and well equipped tourism centres, there are about fifteen beaches with perfect conditions for bathing. Visitors from Bergamo, who wish to discover the lake and enjoy its beauty, should take the road that follows the lake from Sarnico, situated at base of the lake where the waters flow into the river Oglio and form an estuary, to the far north end at Lovere and Costa Volpino.

From Sarnico, a well-known holiday place with some of the best examples of Art Nouveau villas in Lombardy, the road alternates lively towns and desolate stretches along which the relationship between mountain and lake is well established.
Towers, ancient churches and castle ruins provide interest along the route. At Castro, a section of rocky coast plummets down a sheer drop into the lake, offering an incredible sight. These cliffs are the “Bogn”, vertical layered rocks, high spires and rocky spurs.

The town of Lovere is a true gem of town planning with wonderful examples of refined architecture and a beautiful porticoed square opening onto the lake. A short distance away, an elegant neoclassical building is home to the Tadini Galley, a surprising art collection housing pictorial masterpieces including the splendid Madonna with Child by Jacopo Bellini (XV century).

A lake trip should always end on Montisola, the green island studded with churches, towers and castles, which dominate the scenery of the Sebino. It can be reached by taking one of the boats that cross the lake (an excellent occasion for spending an entire day sunbathing and admiring the countryside) or one of the boats that travel back and forth between Sulzano (on the Brescia side) and the old fisherman’s village of Peschiera Maraglio.

A popular tour is the pleasant route, on foot or by bicycle, around the island’s perimeter. Other excursions run along the alleys and paths that wind among the olive groves, and a popular destination is the sanctuary of the Madonna della Cerignola, at 600 metres altitude, with beautiful panoramic views.
