Bergamo, the mountains in winter

There are more than two hundred peaks in the Orobie Alps – 231 to be precise – which are over two thousand metres high, and many of these are also over three thousand metres. This is an extremely large amount if you consider that they all are concentrated in a relatively small area, bound by the two largest Lombardy valleys, the Camonica valley and Valtellina.
The Bergamask mountains are an extremely popular destination, primarily because the Bergamask people have a great passion for mountaineering and all sports connected to the mountains, in particular skiing, but also because they are the nearest mountains to the vast metropolitan area in the heart of the Padana plain, at the centre of which stands Milan.

For this reason, many of the pioneers of skiing came from the Bergamask mountains. At the start of the twentieth century, when Adolfo Kind (who brought the first “skis” to Turin) had only a few followers, a group of enthusiasts trained with “long wooden boards” on the snow-covered slopes of the upper Seriana valley. They conquered the white expanses with difficulty, climbing from the bottom of the valley with skis on their shoulders.

But to reach the snow-covered slopes, the Bergamask people were helped by the fact that the two main valleys through the Orobie mountains, crossed by the Serio river and the Brembo river, were also crossed by railway lines (unfortunately no longer operating) which made them accessible in all weather conditions. It was these trains that enabled the residents of Lombardy to use the first pistes and great ski slopes during seasons when the snowfalls were much more abundant than they are today.

Cableways were even added to the train service. In fact the two main ski lifts in the Bergamask mountains were those in the San Martino valley to Valcava and the wide Albenza ridge, and in the Seriana valley to Selvino and the ridges of the hills that surround this tourist town, already popular before the arrival of skiers. But the great change in winter sports and their increase in popularity in the Bergamo area occurred half a century ago when, together with tumultuous economic development, Italians began to change their habits.

Today, along the entire range of Bergamask mountains, from the Brembana valley to the Seriana valley and the Scalve valley, there are numerous ski resorts that offer thousands of skiers modern ski lifts with dozens of pistes of every level of difficulty, spectacular trails for crosscountry skiing and routes for ski mountaineering.

And after a day in the open air, there are also plenty of opportunities for relaxation and entertainment, including the hospitality in quality
hotels equipped with wellness areas, shopping, local food and wine tasting, and visits to historic villages and places of art. Days spent in the valleys and mountains of Bergamo pass very quickly.
